Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Cendio starts cooperation around thin clients

2007-08-08

Packaging common solution for Windows and Linux on the same desktop

Fujitsu Siemens Computers begins a strategic cooperation with the Swedish Cendio AB which develops ThinLinc, a solution for server based computing. The cooperation means that the companies will create a common unified solution with software, terminals, servers and infrastructure for storage. One of the first to invest in this technology is the municipality of Kristinehamn.

– We are making a strategic investment in server based computing primarily in the municipailty grade schools and in the coming years we plan on switching out around 80 percent of our current PC:s. Significantly lowered costs and easier administration are just a couple of the advantages we are counting on, says Harry Enbom, IT manager for the municipality of Kristinehamn.

According to the market intelligence firm IDC, the sale of thin clients increased by 42 percent in Europe last year (EMEA Thin Client Shipments Continue to Show Strong Growth: http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=pr2006_03_03_121540). In total, over a million terminals were sold in the region.

– We see a clear increase in the interest for centralized computer systems, both regarding the server park and the client computers. For Fujitsu Siemens Computers the cooperation with Cendio means that we can now offer complete solutions in both areas, says Hans Alm, Vice President, Nordic Region for Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

In the target group are companies and organizations, primarily in the public sector, who want to invest in thin clients and open standards. Among those who have chosen Fujitsu Siemens Computers  and Cendio's solution for thin clients are also the University library of Lund and the municipality of Hudiksvall.

The technology cooperation is for the Scandinavian market and means that Cendio's software ThinLinc is adjusted to and verified for Fujitsu Siemens' servers and the company's thin client terminal FUTRO. The packaging will also contain middle software and infrastructure for storage to be able to offer the clients a complete solution.

Alone in mixing Windows and Linux

ThinLinc is the only terminal server system on the market which can easily manage both Windows and Linux based applications. The system is built on open protocols and can be installed on Linux and Solaris. Clients are available for Windows, Linux, Mac and Solaris. This makes it possible to mix software from different operating systems on the same desktop.

– Larger environments almost always encompass several operating systems and it's not always practical to discard any of them to save money. With ThinLinc we offer a possibility to keep a mixed environment and still gain the cost and maintenance advantages offered by server based computing, says Daniel Moosberg, Marketing Manager at Cendio.
