ThinLinc has features for accessing the local resources of clients from the server. Local drives, printers, sound devices, and serial ports can be accessed by software run by the user on the ThinLinc cluster.
Local Drive Access
The redirection of local drives gives the user the ability to access CDROM devices, USB memory sticks, floppy drives and other storage devices attached to the terminal.
Access can be read/write or read-only depending on the functionality and security needs of the environment.
Local Printer Redirection
Using a printer queue added on the ThinLinc server by the installation program, users can print to printers attached to the terminal.
The printjob is transferred in compressed form which means that local printing performance is good even on low bandwidth connections.
Sound Redirection
Sound devices, both input (microphone) and output (speaker and headphones) devices can be used.
Microphone support is important in many school setups where the microphone is used for pupils with special needs.
More information on the sound redirection support is available in a separate article on the sound support.
Serial Port Redirection
Up to two serial ports on the client can be used by software on the server. This can be used for example in callcenter applications to control modems used for dialup, and in banking environments with serial printers.
More information about the redirection features of ThinLinc can be found in the ThinLinc Administrator's Guide.
