Cut Total Cost of Ownership

image29The expense associated with owning and operating a PC workstation begins with the purchase price of the PC and peripherals, but it doesn’t end there. Since all applications are run on a central server, it's possible to cut costs for technical support and system administration.

Support and Administration

Over 75% of workstation expenses are recurring costs. This includes technical support, software upgrades, application maintenance, backup and recovery, and productivity related costs.

In a client-based network, straightforward software upgrades are tedious and expensive, while enterprise application deployments are major projects in terms of hours required. Technicians must physically distribute applications to each user device at their location, as well as deal with version control, data replication, and multiple system configurations.

With the ThinLinc architecture, technicians need only update a centrally located server farm. End users automatically benefit from hardware and software upgrades on the servers, without making any change to their personal device.

image36Client Hardware

With the ThinLinc architecture business applications run on the server rather than the client. This allows users to run the latest software with low-end workstations and operating systems, which in turn eliminates the need for upgrades. When workstations stop working they are not repaired. They are replaced. This allows employees to get back to work immediately. In addition, new workstations can be implemented. Because they rarely break or require upgrades, the terminals’ usable lifespan is three to four times longer than a PC.

Since the client application is small and uses few resources, it is possible to use older hardware, which may give new life to an old computer farm and save on, or postpone, a costly investment in new computers. ThinLinc Client Operating System is a minimal Linux distribution which makes thin clients of older workstation. It's bundled with ThinLinc at no extra cost.

Client Software

ThinLinc is a stand-alone system which doesn't require any other programs to run than the software that comes with the system. This means that if, for instance, a company or organization doesn't need to use Windows applications, there is no need for a Windows Terminal Server, which saves licencing fees.

Networking Infrastructure

Because only key entries, mouse clicks, and screen paints travel across the network, networking bandwidth requirements are greatly reduced. This reduces or eliminates the need for costly networking upgrades.
